Post-Heroic Models

Critiques of leadership as heroism are relatively recent. Major commentators, such as Jim Collins (Good to Great), John Kotter (Leading Change), and John Maxwell (5 Levels of Leadership) propose what we might call “post-heroic’ models that have gained traction in the most influential leadership literature. All three see leadership as promoting effective group dynamics, rather than imposing one’s own will on others. For Collins, the “level five” leader puts forward his ideas in a spirit of “extreme personal humility”; for Kotter, change is not unilateral; for Maxwell, respect and admiration are more important than being the boss.
