Bliss, Really?

University leaders we’ve talked with about the possibility and benefits of professional bliss seem intrigued. But, eyebrows raised, they wonder aloud how a term associated with a deep sense of well-being could apply to people who have so much responsibility. In addition to the usual array of stresses that come from balancing heavy and consequential professional responsibilities with the dynamics of family and finances, from answering to the expectations and priorities of their bosses, and from coping with the larger sociopolitical realm that affronts us daily with worrisome headlines, leaders are also held accountable for the success of the organization or institution that they manage. All this while under the scrutiny of critics eager to pounce on their every decision.

Bliss, really?
